Booked your smart meter appointment? Here's everything you need to know
Before your installation
When your appointment is a few days away, we'll remind you that we're coming. We'll remind you of the date and the appointment slot booked.
If you can make sure the areas around your meters are clear, that would be a massive help.
If there's anything else you think we should know - parking issues; big dogs; scary children, then please let us know in advance
We’re here to talk you through the smart meter installation process! Here's everything you need to know in the run-up, during, and after your appointment. If you’ve booked an appointment - congratulations! - you’re a step closer to greener, more convenient metering, and you’ll soon have access to our revolutionary smart tariffs too.
On the day
Our engineers will give you a call to introduce themselves once they're on their way to you.
When they arrive they'll show you their ID badge to verify who they are.
They'll have a look at the job and explain what they're going to do and how long they expect it to take.
Someone over the age of 18 needs to remain at home whilst the installation takes place.
Your energy supply will be turned off for a short time during the installation. To protect the electrical equipment in your home, our engineer will provide you with the advice below:
All electrical equipment should be switched off and unplugged (including CCTV)
All gas appliances should be switched off - your installer will check your boiler with you as part of their standard gas safety checks
Any important computer data should be saved (unfortunately we can't accept responsibility for data loss).
If you have solar panels you'll need to switch these off at the invertor.
If you have a burglar alarm, you'll need to know how to switch it off (we recommend that it needs to have been regularly maintained)
Our installer will make sure you're ready to proceed before switching off your electricity and gas as we're not able to take responsibility for equipment damaged if left switched on, or plugged in.
We'll also carry out some basic safety checks on your gas appliances.
Once the meters are installed, the engineer will show you how to use your in-home display to help you understand how you can be more energy efficient and where to access further help on your in-home display and energy efficiency.
Your engineer will also leave you a smart guide as a reminder of what they've spoken about.
For reference, we'll leave you with a record of the meter readings for the meters we're taking out and the readings for the new ones we're putting in.
After your installation
We may contact you after your installation for research purposes. We're keen to improve; so would love to hear what you thought of your experience.
